Why Do They Keep Coming Back and Pulling Away?

Woman reflecting on why someone keeps returning and pulling away emotionally
When someone repeatedly returns and withdraws, their feelings may be real—but their behavior reveals whether they are ready for a stable relationship.

A caller felt a genuine connection with someone who repeatedly returned, became emotionally close, and then pulled away. Here is what this pattern can reveal about their feelings—and what you should watch for before opening your heart again.

During a recent chat, a caller described a connection that had become emotionally exhausting. The person she cared about would return, communicate warmly and make her feel that the relationship was finally moving forward. Then, without a clear explanation, he would become distant again.

Her question was one I hear often: “If he has real feelings for me, why does he keep pulling away?”

As I focused on the energy surrounding the connection, I did not feel that his returns were meaningless. There was a genuine emotional attachment present. However, having feelings for someone and being prepared to create a stable relationship with them are not always the same thing.

Why Does Someone Return and Then Pull Away?

People often assume that inconsistent communication means there are no feelings involved. Sometimes that is true—but not always.

In this caller’s situation, I sensed that the connection became most appealing to him when there was emotional distance. When he feared losing her, his feelings became stronger and he moved closer. Once the relationship required vulnerability, consistency or a real decision, he became overwhelmed and pulled back.

This creates a repeating emotional cycle:

  • They miss you and initiate contact.
  • The emotional connection becomes strong again.
  • You begin to feel hopeful and secure.
  • The closeness triggers their fear or uncertainty.
  • They become distant without clearly explaining why.
  • Once enough time passes, they miss you and return again.

Their return can be sincere in the moment, but sincerity alone does not guarantee lasting change.

Do They Really Have Feelings for You?

Someone can care about you and still behave inconsistently. They may think about you, miss your presence and feel emotionally connected while remaining unable—or unwilling—to give you the security you need.

That was the most important message I felt for this caller. She had not imagined the connection. He did have feelings for her, but his emotional hesitation was stronger than his ability to follow through consistently.

This is why trying to measure love only through chemistry, late-night messages or emotional reunions can become confusing. The clearest evidence is found in what happens after the emotional moment passes.

Watch Their Pattern, Not Just Their Return

When someone comes back, it is natural to focus on what they say. They may tell you they missed you, explain that they were overwhelmed or promise that things will be different this time.

Instead of immediately deciding that the relationship has changed, watch what they do over the following days and weeks.

Ask yourself:

  • Are they communicating consistently?
  • Are they making and keeping plans?
  • Are they willing to discuss what caused the distance?
  • Are they taking responsibility for the effect their actions had on you?
  • Are they creating something stable, or only recreating an emotional moment?

A genuine change will usually feel calmer than the previous cycle. You will not have to constantly analyze their messages, wait for another disappearance or wonder where you stand.

Why Is It So Difficult to Let Go?

Hot-and-cold connections can become unusually difficult to release because every return renews hope. The moments of closeness feel especially powerful after a period of silence, creating the impression that the relationship is progressing even when the overall pattern remains unchanged.

My caller was not holding on because she was weak. She was holding on because every return appeared to confirm what she intuitively felt—that the connection mattered.

I sensed that her intuition about his feelings was correct. Where she needed greater clarity was in separating his emotional attachment from his readiness to build a dependable relationship.

Can This Kind of Relationship Become Stable?

Yes, but only when the person who repeatedly withdraws recognizes the pattern and actively changes it. The other partner cannot create consistency for both people.

More patience, understanding or availability will not automatically make someone emotionally ready. Change requires honest communication, accountability and different behavior maintained over time.

If they return but avoid discussing the problem, the cycle will probably repeat. If they return prepared to communicate openly and demonstrate consistency, there may be a genuine opportunity to rebuild.

What This Reading Revealed

I felt that this particular connection was not completely finished, and that another period of communication was likely. However, the caller’s real decision was not whether he would return. His pattern already showed that he could return.

The more important question was: What will he do differently when he does?

A return can answer whether someone misses you. Consistent effort reveals whether they are prepared to keep you.

If you are experiencing an emotionally confusing connection, an intuitive love and relationship reading can help uncover the energy beneath the silence, the intentions surrounding a return and the direction the relationship may be taking.
