What They’re Really Asking: Love, Fear, and the Truth Behind Thousands of Psychic Chats by Melissa Star

After thousands of psychic chats, I learned that the question being typed is rarely the only question someone needs answered. My new book explores the love, fear and deeper emotional truth hiding beneath the questions people ask most.

After years of working as an intuitive empath and psychic advisor, I have learned that the question someone types into a psychic chat is rarely the only question they are truly asking.

A person may ask, “Will they come back?” But underneath that question may be something much more vulnerable:

  • Was I ever truly loved?
  • Did I matter to them?
  • Why was I so easy to leave?
  • Am I foolish for still hoping?
  • Will anyone ever choose me and stay?

Those deeper questions inspired my new book, What They’re Really Asking: Love, Fear, and the Truth Behind Thousands of Psychic Chats.

The question beneath the question

People often enter a psychic chat during an emotionally intense moment. Someone has suddenly stopped communicating. A former partner has returned without explaining what changed. A promising connection has become distant. A relationship feels powerful, but its future remains unclear.

The client may begin by asking what another person feels or whether contact will happen. Yet as the conversation unfolds, it often becomes clear that the deepest concern is not simply about the other person. It is about emotional security, self-worth, rejection, trust and the need to know whether the connection was real.

This is what I call the question beneath the question.

Understanding that hidden question matters because a prediction alone may not provide the clarity someone actually needs. Knowing whether a person may return is only part of the picture. We also need to consider what their return would mean, whether their behavior has changed and whether the relationship can offer the consistency, respect and emotional safety that were missing before.

Why someone’s silence can feel so painful

Silence is rarely experienced as just an absence of communication. When someone suddenly pulls away, the mind naturally tries to fill in the missing information.

Was there someone else? Did I say too much? Did I move too quickly? Were their feelings ever genuine? Are they waiting for me to reach out first?

These thoughts can become exhausting because there is no new information to settle them. The person who disappeared may be avoiding an uncomfortable conversation, processing their own emotions or repeating a familiar pattern of becoming close and then retreating.

My book explores why emotional uncertainty affects people so deeply and why the need for an answer can sometimes become stronger than the relationship itself.

Wanting to be chosen is deeply human

One of the strongest themes I have encountered throughout thousands of psychic chats is the desire to be chosen clearly.

People do not only want affection. They want consistency. They want the other person’s words and behavior to match. They want to feel important without having to chase, convince or repeatedly prove their value.

That desire is not weakness. It reflects a basic emotional need for security and mutual commitment. The difficulty begins when someone accepts uncertainty, disappearing acts or
